Cho Aniki, aka “Super Big Brother”, is a series known for being “Bakage”, literally “stupid games” or “idiot games”. Similar in energy to Parodius, the Cho Aniki games feature surreal imagery and musclebound, thong-clad men firing lasers and flying their way across your screen. The series covers a menagerie of genres, mostly shmups; the SNES game however is a DBZ-style fighting game, the only one of its kind in the series.

Bakuretsu Ranto Hen sees returning characters from the previous two games join new characters in a floating battle royale. You can punch and kick in eight directions, and there are special moves that can be performed as well. Each character has access to two supers, even! Every character can fire a beam by mashing X, and each character has a unique super with its own special input.

Supers, specials, and some normals take energy to perform, measured by a red bar at the top of the screen. Your energy slowly increases over time, but you can charge it manually by holding X and rotating your D-pad in a circle. You’ll need to do this, too, or else suffer a self-inflicted stun when you run out of energy.

I hesitate to call this game outright bad. It’s certainly awkward to play and it doesn’t feel as though there is any intended way to confirm your specials or supers. Some moves do combo, but for the most part it feels like an accident when they do. The biggest challenge for players will be managing their own energy while keeping their opponents’ stores low, since it prevents them from blocking. The AI gets quite good at blocking attacks near the end of a run, and blocking prevents all incoming damage with no high/low distinction, so it’s incredibly strong if you have the energy for it.

Scoring will be determined by number of enemies defeated. If a player beats the game, they can reset at the credits to perform another run.
