A rather janky PS1 game where moving straight is hard and avoiding damage is harder. It has some original TV-quality animations, though!

๐Ÿ“– Background Link to heading

ReBoot was a Canadian cartoon that aired from 1994-2001, the first of its kind and unique for its visual appearance. It was one of the first cartoons done entirely in CGI; while Insektors came nearly a year before ReBoot, being the first fully computer-animated television show, its episodes ran for only 12 minute blocks. Veggietales (1993) predates both, releasing in the direct-to-video format. ReBoot was the first half-hour TV show of its kind, standing toe to toe with the likes of Carmen Sandiego and The Magic School Bus and it is still regarded as a breakthrough moment for the industry.

ReBoot follows the story of Bob, a Guardian who protects the city of Megabyte from viruses such as Megabyte and Hexadecimal, and who fights in Games loaded into the computer by the User.

๐Ÿ Goal Link to heading

Repair all the tears in each area, then find a key card before moving on.

Levels Link to heading

Level 1: Baudway Link to heading

Tears are all between buildings. Keycard is off a jump leading to a roof.

Level 2: Baudway (Port) Link to heading

The tears are below bow of ship, in the aft deck cabin, and between some shipping crates. The keycard requires a jump off a ridge along the center of the ship.

Level 3: Baudway (Sewer) Link to heading

The tears are at the ground floor, in the sludge, and in a spout near the second tear.

  • The snake thing will try to kill you while you repair tear 2
  • There’s a ramp near the second tear that you can use to get out of the sludge.
  • The keycards for this level are on catwalks high up in the level with precarious platforming to reach them. The first two can be accessed from the ramp on the main level. The third is across a few gaps from the pit ramp.

Level 4: Cit E Link to heading

The first tear is around a corner. The second one is up on a rooftop and you NEED the full three minutes to get there. There’s some REAL stupid platforming required here. Worse, you have to backtrack to get to the third tear. The keycards are at least mostly on the way.

Level 5: Cit E (Highway) Link to heading

The movement in this level is really fun, if you can get avoid getting hit. The first tear in this level is between a bottomless pit, a teleporter, and mines. Even if you pick up the grapple hook glitch to save you from falling off the edge here, it’s possible to spawn back on top of the tear and die.

Boss: Super Tank Link to heading

You really just have to move straight and blitz down the tank. If you have missiles, those do lots of damage. The mortar does as well, but you need to get dangerously close to make it connect.

๐Ÿ“ Notes Link to heading

  • You can save and load your game, but the game saves how many lives you have, so watch out for that.
  • The menu doesn’t communicate it at all but you press left/right on the title screen to select “load game”
  • Tears will suck you in as you repair them, which you might think makes it easier to repair them, but you’ll usually get swung around and thrown away, or bumped into the tear itself.
  • There is a degree of auto-aim but it’s finnicky and not predictable.
